INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — April 30, 2015 — Mother Nature has certainly been a tough competitor for Taylor Ferns this season. After a rainout last weekend at Atomic Speedway in Ohio, she will try again to make her second start of the season at the high-banked three-eighths-mile this weekend with the Ohio Valley Sprint Car Association (OVSCA).
The OVSCA event at Atomic Speedway on Saturday, May 2 is part of the Dan Reno Memorial, which will feature special races for late models and modifieds.
“I’ve been trying to watch racing videos and videos I have on my GoPro from past races to keep me in the swing of things,” said Ferns, who drives the Eco-Mend/Jimmy’s Towing Maxim. “When we have rainout weekends and weekends off, it is important to try to stay sharp and keep your mind on racing.”
The 19-year-old has made one start at Atomic Speedway this season, with that coming on April 18. In that event, Ferns crossed the line fifth in the first heat race to earn a spot in the A-Feature. In the main event, she got into the wall on the eighth lap, which ended her night. She would be scored in the 22nd position.
“I’m really excited to head back to Atomic this weekend,” she shared. “It’s a track I’m very familiar with and I have a lot of confidence running there. It’s also one of my favorite tracks so that always helps. We’ve had a strong car for a lot of the races this year we just don’t have the finishes to show for it so hopefully we can have a good run this weekend to boost the team morale.”
Ferns made eight appearances at Atomic Speedway last year. In the annual “Night the Stars Come Out” event with the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions, she was fastest in time trials of the 30 drivers in attendance. The Michigan native, who now calls the Indianapolis area home, also competed with the All Stars at Atomic during the 2014 Ohio Sprint Speedweek, earning a spot in the dash, after timing in sixth-fastest of the 62 entrants.
During the season-ending Open Wheel Championships last year at Atomic, she finished fifth in the Charlie McCann Memorial, which was contested by the 20-fastest drivers from time trials that did not transfer to the Open Wheel Championships main event.
Ferns has made seven starts to date in 2015. She kicked off her season with three starts in Florida in February with the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions, finishing eighth on opening night at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala and following that up with a pair of 11th-place efforts. She followed that up by racing at Attica Raceway Park and Fremont Speedway in Ohio, as well as competing with the Neal Tire MOWA Series at Tri-City Speedway in Illinois.
Ferns has a variety of winged 410-sprint car races on her 2015 schedule across the Midwest as she runs a “True Outlaw” schedule.
