With a top-10 finish under his belt on opening night, Walt Motorsports headed to Sunset Speedway this past weekend looking to keep improving. Mission accomplished as Rick Walt would post a second place finish in the first feature, before finishing 11th in the second feature.
Walt would kick off the night on a good note, time trialing in at 14.844 seconds to start the first feature from the third spot. On the drop of the green, the front runners were able to get out in front, with Walt battling side-by-side with Tom Walters for third. The pair would battle up until the first caution at lap four, and past it with Walt able to get to the spot solidly at lap seven.
Walt would then work on tracking down Holdaway for second, catching him and completing the pass for second – just to have the caution fly for a car going around. As a result of Sunset Speedway rules going back a lap when the caution is thrown, Holdaway would get the spot back.
With seven laps to go, Walt would restart from the third spot, and found himself caught underneath Jason Hathaway for the first couple of laps. He would clear Hathaway, before catching Holdaway and passing him with two laps to go to finish second.
With a 14-car invert used to set the starting line-up for the second feature, Walt would be slated to start from the 13th starting spot. Racing against the top drivers in the province, his progress through the field would be slow but steady. By the time the first caution waved at lap 17 for Dave Bartlett spinning, Walt would be up to the 11th spot. He would then pass Mat Box to crack the top 10 before the second caution flew at lap 19. The progress would continue with Walt moving up to the ninth spot by the third caution at lap 30.
The final restart, though, would not go Walt’s way as he would fall back a couple spots, crossing the finish line in the 11th spot.
