Rookie Takes Top Spot For Canadian Tire Series Opener
BOWMANVILLE, Ont. (May 16, 2015) – Gary Klutt got his rookie of the year campaign off to a fast start.
The 22-year-old from Halton Hills, Ontario, earned the pole Saturday for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 season opener at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Klutt, who has six career starts, earned the top spot for Sunday’s Pinty’s presents the Clarington 200 with a lap of 1 minute, 23.261 seconds in his No. 59 CTL Corp./Legendary Motorcar Chevrolet around the 2.459-mile, 10-turn asphalt road course.
Klutt’s previous best starting position was seventh at CTMP in 2013.
He’ll start on the front row for Sunday’s race with two-time series champion Andrew Ranger. Ranger piloted the No. 27 Mopar/Pennzoil/Exide Dodge to a lap of 1:23.346 (106.213).
Three-time series champion Scott Steckly qualified third at 1:23.398 (106.146) and will make up the second row along with defending series champion L.P. Dumoulin.
Rookie Kevin Lacroix qualified fifth.
D.J. Kennington was sixth, followed by Kerry Micks, rookie Pier-Luc Ouellette — who was fastest in practice — and Jason Hathaway.
The ninth season opener for the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series is the headline for the Victoria Day SpeedFest Weekend. Sunday’s Pinty’s presents the Clarington 200 is scheduled to take the green at 12:30 p.m.
