Austin Dillon turned in a dominating performance Saturday at Charlotte Motor Speedway driving the No. 33 Rheem Chevrolet fielded by Richard Childress Racing. Dillon led an impressive 163 of 200 laps en route to victory.
Dillon began the weekend by securing the pole for the NASCAR Xfinity series event at the 1.5 mile quad-oval nestled in the heart of NASCAR country. Dillon’s lap 184.615 mph edging out Roush-Fenway Racing driver, Darrel Wallace Jr.
Dillon’s domination did not stop at qualifying. Starting from the pole, Dillon grabbed the lead and did not look back. It seemed no one had anything for the 2013 NASCAR Xfinity Series champion.
A late race caution provided a glimmer of hope for Denny Hamlin, driving the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota usually piloted by Kyle Busch. Hamlin managed to snatch the lead on a restart, but it wasn’t long before the dominating Dillon challenged for the lead again. The two battled side-by-side for lap for Dillon secured the lead once again.
After regaining the lead, Dillon cruised to his second victory of the season and fourth of his career.
Denny Hamlin held on the second after leading 19 laps. Kasey Kahne, Regan Smith, and Darrel Wallace Jr. rounded out the top-five.
The series now travels to Dover International Raceway for the Buckle Up 200 presented by Click It or Ticket on Saturday, May 30.
