DETROIT — Luca Filippi, who qualified 19th in the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Vodka CFH Racing Chevrolet for Race 1 of the Chevrolet Dual in Detroit presented by Quicken Loans, turned the quickest lap in the 30-minute warm-up session at 1 minute, 16.7466 seconds.
“It doesn’t count now, but it’s a way to say sorry to my guys to not getting the position we deserved,” Filippi said. “It’s a long race and we have to race smart.”
Helio Castroneves was second on the lap time sheet at 1:16.7484 in the No. 3 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet as Verizon IndyCar Series teams prepared for the 70-lap race at 3:30 p.m. (ET). Watch it on ABC. Teams also were practicing pit stops and working on the balance of their cars for the bumpy 2.35-mile, 14-turn street circuit.
Pole sitter Will Power, driving the No. 1 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, was seventh in the session at 1:17.1157. He set the qualifying lap record at 1:16.0941 in the Firestone Fast Six session on May 29. Castroneves, driving the No. 3 Hitachi Chevrolet, will join him on Row 1. They were the winners of the races last year on Belle Isle.
Qualifications for Race 2 are at 11:25 a.m. (ET) May 31, with the race at 3:30 p.m. (ABC). The Verizon P1 Award for the pole position will be awarded to the best overall lap time in the qualifying sessions. The remainder of the cars in the same group as the Verizon P1 Award winner will be ranked in the odd-numbered race starting positions based on fastest lap times. Even-numbered starting positions will be determined from the other group based on fastest lap times.
