Delaware Speedway played host to the HOOSIER Mods as part of the Great Canadian Weekend this past Friday night. Gary McLean who the previous week celebrated The Woolner Memorial win, had his sight clearly set on victory lane at Delaware Speedway.
HOOSIER MODS: With the tracks all preparing for play off season, the Mods where part of the two day show at the fast half mile of Delaware Speedway. With eighteen drivers signed in for competition fans were treated to some fast, side by side open wheel racing.
The night started off with only two qualifying heats to set the starting field for the 25 lap feature event. The first heat race would find the #7 of Brent McLean returning to Mod racing and leading the field to green. From the drop of the green flag the action was side by side battle throughout the pack. Coming out of turn four heading to the checkers, it was the #79h of Cory Horner and #63 John Baker JR in a drag race to the line. When the checker waved the call went to the #79 of Horner by mere inches over Baker JR. The second heat race would see two Delaware veterans battle it out for the win. Cole Powell stepped into the #5 mod owned by DJ Christie, who would take the win over the #82 of Justin DeMello.
With the humid night the fog started rolling in on the speedway, but once the mods hit the track it quickly evaporated. Gary Elliott has been having some great feature finishes and would find himself on the pole for the feature event along side the #7 of Brent McLean. Elliott would be able to lead the first lap before third starting Gary McLean would put his #8 Mod in the lead and set sail. The HOOSIER Mod drivers put on some great high speed racing, as the rest of the field jockeyed for position. All eyes would be on the #5 of Powell who would start the feature in 12th place as a result of the new tire rule. Powell who has 1000’s of laps at the ½ mile would slowly move his way towards the front. A restart on lap 16 would find the #8 of McLean and the #5 of Powell start side by side. McLean showed the fans he would not be denied this win and pulled away from Powell to record his 6th feature win on the season and now has a firm grasp on the 2015 Championship title. Powell would bring the #5 home in second place, as the Christie team prepares for a Rookie Campaign in 2016. It would be a 2015 Rookie contender #99 AJ Emms who would best his best career finish with a 3rd place run. The Adams Motorsports team has shown great speed the past few events and a feature win in the last two events could very well be in their future. John “Spyderman” Harper has also been one of the hottest drivers on the tour the past month and continued that streak with a fourth place finish. Pole sitter Gary Elliott would round out the podium with a great fifth place run. Coming into the event Gary Elliott and Cory Horner would come in tied for second in the points, and after this event they are still tied for second place heading into Velocity Weekend at Sunset Speedway.
The HOOSIER Mod teams are now busy preparing for their two day event at the upcoming Velocity Weekend. Fans can expect to see a full field of the best in the business as the qualifying heats will be contested on Saturday followed by the feature event on Sunday afternoon. If you are not able to attend you will be able to follow all the racing action on Sunday on Racetime Radio as all the features will be broadcast live.
