TALLADEGA, AL – For fans planning their visits to NASCAR’s Most Competitive track – Talladega Superspeedway – in 2016, the weekend dates for both the spring and fall will have a familiar feel as in recent years.
The traditional May kickoff weekend is set for the GEICO 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on Sunday, May 1, 2016. The GEICO 500 will be the anchor event of the weekend, which will also consist of the ARCA Racing Series (which has competed at Talladega since 1969) race on Friday, April 29, as well as the NASCAR XFINITY Series 300-miler on Saturday, April 30.
Talladega will again have its spot in the 2016 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup on Sunday, Oct. 23. It will mark the third straight year that the 188-lap, 500-mile NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race will be the sixth race in The Chase, the important third and final event in the Contender Round where the field of eligible drivers for the championship will be cut from 12 to eight. The fred’s 250 Powered by Coca-Cola NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race also headlines the weekend on Saturday, Oct. 22.
“Over the last few years, the dates on the calendar for our events here at Talladega Superspeedway have been very similar,” said Talladega Superspeedway Chairman Grant Lynch, “and that helps our fans to plan their return to the greatest race track on the planet. We had great weather this year – both in May and October – so we can’t wait for 2016.”
Monday, NASCAR announced the entire 2016 schedules for both the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and NASCAR XFINITY Series. NASCAR also announced agreements with 23 tracks – including Talladega Superspeedway – to field NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races for the next five years. Additionally, 24 tracks – including Talladega – will host NASCAR XFINITY Series events through 2020. The five-year agreements position NASCAR to deliver fans with schedules as early as possible over the next several years.
Race winners at Talladega this year included: Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Joey Logano in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Logano in the NASCAR XFINITY Series, Timothy Peters in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and Blake Jones in the ARCA Racing Series.
