Whelen Southern Mods Open 2016 Season At Caraway
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
• The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East will head to Alabama’s Mobile International Speedway for its second race of the season and its inaugural race at the half-mile oval. After an exciting season opener at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway, new and old faces will look to capture their first victory of the year. With New Smyrna race winner, Todd Gilliland, not scheduled to compete the Mobile 150 trophy and first place in the series standings is up for grabs. Some familiar faces will be entering the fray as former series race winners Jesse Little and Brandon Gdovic will be making their first starts of the season.
• The green flag at North Carolina’s Caraway Speedway on Saturday will usher in the 2016 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour season. George Brunnhoelzl III and defending two-time tour champion Andy Seuss will enter as the early favorites as the two have won 14 of the last 20 races at the .455-mile track. Jason Myers set the track record during qualifying for this event last year and looks to continue his streak as the only driver to start every event held at Caraway since the tour began in 2005.
A LOOK BACK
• The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East opened their season at New Smyrna Speedway on February 14. Third-generation driver Todd Gilliland captured his second victory in just his second K&N Pro Series in just his second start. Gilliland took home the win after some late-race drama, while Spencer Davis, Ronnie Bassett Jr., Kyle Benjamin and Justin Haley rounded out the top five.

NASCAR WHELEN ALL-AMERICAN SERIES
• The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series got underway in earnest this past weekend with a trio of historic southeast race tracks opening. Chase Purdy swept the Late Model features at South Carolina’s Greenville Pickens Speedway Saturday, and 14-year-old Ryan Millington took down the Late Model Stock Car feature win at North Carolina’s Hickory Motor Speedway. Sunday, Caraway Speedway in Sophia, North Carolina, began its 51st season with a 150-lap Late Model event that included three-time national champion Lee Pulliam. Tommy Lemons Jr. emerged from the pack to claim the checkered.
