After earning his best career Verizon IndyCar Series oval track finish at the 99th Indianapolis 500-mile race last year by placing third, Novo Nordisk Chip Ganassi Racing’s Charlie Kimball, enters his eighth season in the premier North American open wheel racing circuit looking to continue to build on the momentum gained last year at the Brickyard. Although Kimball’s one career victory came at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in 2013, Kimball showed his greatest potential to date on the oval tracks in 2015. In addition to his strong performance at Indy, he also earned top ten finishes at both Texas Motor Speedway and Auto Club Speedway in California.
While Kimball is no stranger to IndyCar competition, his full time sponsor Novo Nordisk has been running alongside the 31-year old veteran with nearly every turn of the wheel. Kimball, who was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes in 2007 and has to concentrate on his own physical condition while in competition, has been featured sporting the many different brands of the Novo Nordisk family on the circuit, ranging from the orange and blue livery of NovoLog FlexPen to last year’s Levemir blue and green kit he featured last year at the Indy 500. 2016 will feature the colors of black and green on the No. 83 Ganassi Chevrolet as Tresiba will be promoted on the Kimball machine, continuing this weekend at the Phoenix Grand Prix. Tresiba, is a once-daily injection to treat diabetes that was approved for sale by the Food and Drug Adminstration in September of last year.
“The new look of this car represents something very personal to me,” said Kimball who has been an advocate for those suffering from diabetes, through Novo Nordisk’s Race With Insulin campaign. “Just as there have been advancements in racing, there have been advancements in the management of diabetes. The new look of my 2016 car represents another strong link between this program and the diabetes community.”
While not commonly mentioned among the heavy hitters on the four-car Chip Ganassi Racing lineup, Kimball does enter Phoenix with some momentum in his corner after finishing tenth at the season opening Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
