PICTON, Ont. (April 26, 2016) – With a new car in the garage, Andrew Hennessy begins his defense of the Canadian Modified division championship on Saturday night at Brighton Speedway.
The Picton, Ont. native won his second championship in the division last September – the first was in 2008 – but refused to remain complacent and upgraded to a new car over the winter months. Hennessy had his first chance to put laps on the Larry Shaw-built car last weekend.
“After driving that car on Saturday, I’m ready to go now. You sit there all winter wondering and asking ‘what did I buy?’ I felt comfortable the first time I got in it,” Hennessy explained prior to the season opener. “I like the way I sit in it, I like what I can see out of it. I feel pretty confident with it already.”
Naturally there are differences between Hennessy’s championship winning car and his new entry, however, he is confident the transition will be mostly seamless.
“I just want to get the setup in the ballpark and then read the track from there. It doesn’t change too much,” said the veteran driver. “As for as driving, my goal is always to be in the top-five every night. I’m happy if I finish top-five, but if you can be in the top-three that’s obviously preferred.”
In order to repeat his championship performance from last season, Hennessy knows he will have to be at the top of his game throughout the entirely of the five month long season.
“I thought last year was good competition wise and I think this year will be better. A handful of guys got new equipment. I hope everybody has a good season,” Hennessy said optimistically.
Hennessy has a second addition to his race team in 2016 as well. His step-son, Tyson, will compete in the Brighton Speedway Kart Klub on Thursday nights for the first time this season. Tyson, who is just five years old, will drive kart No.87jr.
“I think the go-kart is the coolest thing ever. I’m going to be able to go every week. I’ve had him out in my parents’ driveway and he’s a little speed demon,” joked Hennessy. “I’m looking forward to his racing as much as I am my own car.”
The first green flag of the season at Brighton Speedway waves on Saturday, April 30 at 7:00pm. The Kart Klub kicks off its third season on Thursday, May 26. For more information, visitwww.brightonspeedway.ca.
