by Tommy Goudge (April 27, 2016) – Caistor Centre, Ontario – Jamie Turner and sons Cory and Ryan got their 2016 season started on Saturday as the Patriot Sprint Tour invaded Merrittville Speedway.
The three TTR drivers were among 30 entries for the event at the Thorold, Ontario track. Things began on a sour note for the team, as Ryan’s car suffered a terminal mechanical failure during the warmup session, while Cory and Jamie both drew starting positions at the tail end of their heat races.
Cory and Jamie were able to salvage good results; Cory drove from 10th to 6th in his heat race to earn a spot in the Dash. Jamie did even better by going from 9th to 3rd and earning enough passing points to get a spot in the redraw for A-Feature starting positions.
“I was fast!” Cory exclaimed. “10th to 5th or 4th would have made the redraw.”
Cory started 3rd in the Dash and won it – his first checkered flag in the Hill’s Racing #97 – and earned the 9th starting spot in the A-Feature. The race went green-to-checkered without any stoppages, and Cory drove steadily forward to emerge with a 5th place finish. Jamie fell back a few spots in the A-Feature, but stayed in the top 10 with a 7th place finish.
“(I) got bottled up on the start of the A, and it went straight through,” noted Cory. “I was pretty happy for the first night out.”
