by Tommy Goudge (May 10, 2016) – Six Nations, Ontario – Rain again interfered with the plans of the Hill’s Racing Team last weekend in New York’s Finger Lakes region, but they did manage to get one race in the books.
Alex Hill and teammate Cory Turner were planning to race in the opening race of the Patriot Sprint Tour’s American series on Friday at Outlaw Speedway, but it was washed out. Dryer weather and 27 other competitors greeted Alex and Cory for Saturday’s PST event at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. Both drivers were making their first start at the track known as the “Land of Legends”.
Luck of the draw placed Cory and Alex 8th on the grid to start their respective heat races. Cory advanced to finish in a transfer spot in 5th, while Alex finished 8th in a stacked heat and had to qualify through the B-Main.
The half-mile track at the Ontario County Fairgrounds was slick by feature time, giving Alex – a rookie in 360 Sprint Cars – some valuable experience on that type of surface. She started 20th and caught a piece of the wall, but was able to continue and finish 17th.
“I really liked it because it was big and fast,” Alex said of her first Canandaigua start after being a spectator there in the past. “It wasn’t what I expected – I didn’t remember it being that big or fast but it was a really fun track, and (I) would love to go back and race there.
“It was really slick, and something that I’m not used to yet,” she noted. “I need to learn how to go slower on slick tracks. I feel like I try too hard a lot of the time and try and go fast, but I need to get it through my head that slow means fast sometimes! That’s probably why I ended up hitting the wall in the feature, so I have to work on that problem.”
Cory was able to maintain his starting spot and finish 12th, but feels he could have done better.
“(We) missed the setup a little bit (and) left too much stagger in the car,” Cory commented. “Fun track though…big, wide, and fast.”
UP NEXT:
One more weekend remains before the Sprint Car season kicks into high gear in Southern Ontario.
Alex Hill and her #77x team are planning to race in a NRA Invaders series event at Lima, Ohio this Friday before heading to Crystal, Michigan for a Sprints On Dirt series event on Saturday.
Dain Naida will also be back in action with his #17x team for the rescheduled event at Crystal, which will be the first for the new “unlimited” Sprints On Dirt series rules package.
Cory Turner and his #97 team will get some practice in at Ohsweken Speedway’s Test & Tune Night on Friday, and make a decision later in the week on whether to race somewhere on Saturday.
