After running in the top-five for almost a third of the 100-lap feature, Tim Tolton would run into mechanical issues, posting a DNF for the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup season opener.
Tolton and Black Magic Racing started off Saturday night well, posting the fifth quickest time (15.35 seconds) in time trials. Once the fast-five invert was complete, Tolton would start the 100-lap feature in the fourth start.
Tolton was able to maintain ground in the opening laps, only slipping one spot back from his starting spot to run fifth in line. From there, he was able to make a pass on Kevin Allen on a Lap 23 restart to move back up to the fourth position.
Tolton ran fourth till Lap 66 when he’d pull off the track with a mechanical issue. He’d return to the track at Lap 73, though ended up pulling off once again, retiring for the night.
Running the car known as Nightmare from last season, the team was pleased with the speed that they showed and looks poised to have a stronger run in the second event of the season.
“Nightmare gave us the usual headaches that we have started to expect but the crew did a great job of fixing the problems as needed and the spotter did a great job of coaching the driver and kept him consistent on the track,” Tolton commented post-race. “The team effort gave us a performance that we never expected on used tires left over from last year!
“Unfortunately, Nightmare retired early from the race but I’m still happy to have it on standby for the future. Enjoy your retirement, Nightmare.”
The new car is almost ready to go, set for testing at Flamboro Speedway in the next couple weeks. The team hopes to have the car out for the second race on the schedule, which takes place on May 28 at Flamboro.
