BRIGHTON – May 18, 2016 – Brighton Speedway’s 49th season of racing continues this weekend as NOCO Fuels and Mix 97 present the return of the Southern Ontario Sprints for the series’ 2016 season opener. Saturday also marks the track’s 6th annual Chili Contest. Pro Late Models, Pro Stocks and Comp 4s are also on the schedule. Adult general admission is $20 and race time is7:00pm with warm-up sessions scheduled for 6:00pm.
The annual chili contest is open to any fans or teams who want to compete for bragging rights. Participants will list their main ingredient and are encouraged to give their entry a creative and entertaining name. Prizes will be awarded for Most Creative Name and Best Tasting. Angie Kirby has won the Best Tasting chili for the past two seasons.
The return of the Southern Ontario Sprints is the main event of the evening for Canada’s only touring 360 Sprint Car series. The SOS will compete at Brighton six times in 2016 as part of their 13-race schedule. This weekend will be a combination of drivers making their first start of the season while others will already be in full swing.
Brantford, Ont. native Mitch Brown is the defending series champion and has been in action since starting his season in Florida in February. He will be challenged by a number of SOS top competitors, including 2014 champion Glenn Styres, Hill’s Racing driver Dain Naida, Cory Turner and Alex Hill. Styres has won 15 times at Brighton Speedway while Naida has won three times and Turner earned his first series win at the track last season.
Brown, however, has been a tough competitor himself at Brighton, with four victories at the 1/3-mile oval to his credit including last season’s season opener. Picton driver Chris Jones, a 2013 series champion, will be another tough competitor entering the new season. Suffice it to say, the field will certainly be strong.
The Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Models return to action this week as well following Adam Turner’s week two win. Turner won a non-stop 30-lap feature last Saturday night, holding off a hard-charging Charlie Sandercock and point-leader Phil Potts in the dying laps. The win pushed Turner to fourth in the championship standings, just 15 points behind Sandercock and Steve Baldwin, who sit tied for second. Brighton’s Brandon Mowat completes the current top-five.
In Pro Stock action, Wade Purchase scored the week two win despite a last corner challenge from defending champion Justin Ramsay. The win was Purchase’s first in a year after he won on week two in 2015 as well. Ramsay maintains the current point lead over Jonah Mutton, who finished third one week ago, and Purchase in third. Brandon Murrell and Mike Freeman complete the current top-five in the standings.
Tyler French has been unstoppable thus far, winning every race he’s started, heats included. As a result, the Trenton native is the current point leader with a 30-point advantage over Adam Flieler. Flieler has been impressive himself to start the season with two runner-up finishes. Josh Read, Peter Moore and Luke Toms complete the current top-five in the standings.
