The first weekend of the racing season on the calendar for Rick Spencer-Walt and team went successfully, with a pair of top-five finishes.
On Saturday night, Spencer-Walt finished first and second in his heats, poised for a strong run in the feature. However, contact in the late stages saw Spencer-Walt restart 12th with five laps to go. He made the most of the situation, making his way back up to fifth by the time the checkered flag flew.
He then took his show on the road, making the trip to Sunset Speedway on Sunday for the second day of the Hoosier Spring Velocity weekend. With having missed qualifying on Saturday, Spencer-Walt started tail end on the field.
With a couple passes early and escaping an early wreck at Lap 6, Spencer-Walt quickly made his way to the front, running eighth with 68 laps to go. The move to the front continued on the restart, as he’d make up a couple more spots, getting alongside Marvin Freiburger for fifth. He then used a Lap 14 restart to move up to fourth, followed by a pass on Mike Bentley at Lap 24 to move up to third.
Unfortunately, a restart at Lap 34 resulted in Spencer-Walt falling back to fifth, but there were no signs of giving up shown. Just nine laps later, Spencer-Walt got by both Scott Wylie and Thayne Hallyburton to move into third.
From there on, Spencer-Walt continued driving hard, fending off all challenges from behind to cross the finish line in third for a podium finish.
