TRENTON, Ont. – May 25, 2015 – A busy and travel-filled weekend for Charlie Sandercock and the 57 Racing Team produced a top-five and a top-10 finish during visits to three different racetracks.
The weekend started at Brighton Speedway where Sandercock turned in a fourth-place finish in the 35-lap main event. A slick track made passing difficult as Sandercock also continued to tinker with the setup on his new car.
“There was a good group of cars up front and all around this year at Brighton. There’s lots of good competition. We’re still trying to work out the new car. We’re trying to make it fit the way we want it to,” Sandercock explained. “It’s slowly starting to come around. We can’t complain about our finishes, but everybody always wants to finish better than you do.”
Following the top-five result at Brighton, Sandercock travelled east to Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, NY. After a fourth-place finish in his heat, Sandercock started 12th for the 30-lap Gnome Cup. The car was lightning quick from the drop of the green as Sandercock drove to sixth by the time of the first caution on lap three.
Lap three would be the final lap of the event, however, as rain halted the event. After the early success, the postponement of the race to August 14 was disappointing for Sandercock.
“We made some changes before the feature and we were supper happy with the car. We really wanted to finish out that race, but that didn’t happen. Hopefully we’ll go back, pick-up where we left off and keep marching forward,” Sandercock concluded.
The final race of the weekend saw Sandercock make his first career appearance at Merrittville Speedway for his first RUSH Dirt Late Model touring series start of the season. Sandercock timed 15thfastest in the 28-car field after slotting in towards the end of the session.
“I was at the end of the time trial order. You could definitely see the times slowing down as cars went out,” Sandercock said.
A fourth-place finish in heat race action placed Sandercock 15th on the starting grid for the main event. He used the highline through the middle of the race to gain the eighth position where he finished at the end of the 30-lap event.
“The racetrack was good. I’ll race on a slick, smooth track any day over a tacky rough track,” Sandercock said of his first Merrittville start. “We made a few more adjustment to the car and, not knowing the racetrack and not having been there before, you don’t know exactly what tire compounds or whether its abrasive, but all in all we were happy with our finish.”
Sandercock will return to action with a single race weekend. The 57 Racing Team will compete at Brighton Speedway on May 28. The race marks the first Fan Appreciation night of the season. Fans can meet Charlie on the track for autographs at intermission.
