ORO STATION, Ont. – May 25, 2016 – The start to Tyler Hawn’s 2016 season went even better than the script his team had written as the Oro Station, Ont. native earned his first career top-five finish in an OSCAAR Super Late Model. Hawn also won his first career Super Late Model heat race during the OSCAAR season opener at Flamboro Speedway on May 21.
“We started seventh. The car was really good at the start of the race. We had some chassis issues on the long run,” Hawn said. “The left front shock was maxed out, so it was picking the left front tire off the ground. We just kind of leveled back, battled a bit of a brake issue and finished fifth.”
The strong run was particularly satisfying for Hawn after endless long nights preparing for the 2016 season.
“That’s our first OSCAAR win and our first top-five since we started running OSCAAR,” said an overjoyed Hawn. “It’s nice to know we’re capable of being there. It’s a good stepping-stone for the start of the season. It sets our goals even higher. Our goal was always top-five, now it can be top-three.”
The team came home without any damage to the car and only needs to perform basic maintenance to the car before returning to action at Flamboro on June 18. When the car hits the track again, Hawn hopes he can make a few improvements behind the wheel.
“I have to improve on my entry in to the corner’s that seems to be where a lot of the guys are getting me. I want to improve my confidence and drive it harder and harder.”
Hawn’s team had support over the weekend from renowned racing guru Brian MacDonald. Alongside Hawn’s crew, MacDonald certainly helped bolster the night for the team. It was further incentive for Hawn to push the car.
“My team surprises me every time we race with how hard we work together. Everything went really smooth. It was a good day to race and attitudes were good,” Hawn commented.
The focus now shifts to round two at Flamboro as Hawn now sets out to improve on his top-five performance.
Before the team hits the track again, they will attend a fundraiser at Fox’s Bakery on Saturday, May 28 in support of Radio for Cardiology, which supports the Royal Victoria Hostpital in Barrie. Hawn’s No.2 Fox’s Bakery Super Late Model will be on hand for supporters of the fundraiser to see. The event runs all day at Fox’s Bakery located in Barrie at 96 Victoria Street.
