by Tommy Goudge (June 8, 2016) – Caistor Centre, Ontario – Jamie Turner and sons Cory and Ryan didn’t have a great start to their weekend on Friday at Ohsweken Speedway, but they bounced back on Sunday at Humberstone Speedway.
Jamie and Ryan both lost positions in their heat races at Ohsweken while Cory maintained his spot, but didn’t gain any passing points. As a result, none of the three qualified for the redraw for A-Feature starting positions. Cory was able to move from 10th to finish 7th in the A-Feature, while Jamie moved from 20th to 11th, and Ryan went 16th to 12th.
“Tonight was one of the first nights this year that we all struggled a little as a team in our qualifying heats, putting us all deep in the starting lineup for the A (Feature),” Jamie noted on Friday. “We all moved forward, but it is tough going from back in the pack.”
Cory and his Hill’s Racing Team #97 made the trip to South Buxton Raceway near Chatham, Ontario on Saturday, but the Southern Ontario Sprints tour event was rained out after hot laps. All three drivers were in attendance the following night at Humberstone Speedway in Port Colborne, Ontario for the second half of the SOS weekend. Rain threatened that event as well, but didn’t prevent the races from running.
Jamie started on the pole of his heat race and drove away from the field to take the win, while Cory moved from third to first to win his heat race as well. Ryan settled for 4th and started outside the redraw in the A-Feature. Cory and Jamie both started in the top 6 in the A-Feature, and Cory led early before eventually falling into a side-by-side race with his father for the 3rd spot. Jamie prevailed to finish 3rd, with Cory 4th, and Ryan moved up to finish right behind them in 5th.
“We have years of experience at Humberstone as a team,” Jamie noted. “Tonight that experience helped us all have a good night.”
The top 5 finishes helped to propel the Team Turner drivers to the top of the SOS championship points standings. Jamie’s lead over Ryan stands at 8 points, while Cory is just 3 points behind Ryan. The next SOS event is scheduled for June 18 at Brighton Speedway, but before that the team will defend home turf at Ohsweken Speedway this Friday, June 10 against invaders from the Patriot Sprint Tour.
