The first practice session at Texas Motor Speedway for the Firestone 600 saw six Chevrolet and four Hondas in the top-10.
The fastest speed was 216.745 mph posted by Tony Kanaan, driver of the No. 10 NTT Data Chevrolet. Following him in second was his Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon, driver of the No. 9 Target Chevrolet, with a speed of 216.242 mph. Third and fourth went to Josef Newgarden, driver of the no. 21 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet, with a speed of 216.242 mph, and Charlie Kimball, driver of the No. 83 Tresiba Chevrolet, with a speed of 215.955 mph. In fifth and the fastest Honda of the day was Marco Andretti, driver of the No. 27 Snapple Honda, with a speed of 215.903 mph.
Sixth through tenth were as follows Carlos Munoz, Alexander Rossi, Juan Pablo Montoya, Will Power and Ryan Hunter-Reay. It’s well to note that all the Hondas in the top-10 were the four Andretti Autosport entries at Texas.
There was one incident as Gabby Chaves, driver of the No. 19 Boy Scouts of America Honda, lost control and made contact with the Turn 4 barrier about seven minutes into the session.
