BRIGHTON, Ont. (June 20, 2016) – Phil Potts earned a top-10 finish in Vanderlaan Building Products Pro Late Model weekly competition on Saturday night, continuing a streak of what is now seven straight finishes with a top-10 finish at Brighton Speedway.
While the 10th-place result is still a positive, Potts is a disappointed after running sixth for the majority of the race until he tangled with a lapped car and spun in turn three with four laps remaining.
“I stuffed my nose in there. (Adam) Nayler had my line. I tried getting underneath him, but I couldn’t get enough bite in the slick to get past him. I thought I was going to use the lapped car, but Mayhew didn’t know I was there. He might not have even touched me, but I jammed the brakes on doing it,” Potts commented.
He was sent to the back of the field for the restart as a result of the incident and raced back to 10th at the drop of the checkered flag.
“I went to the back and there wasn’t enough laps left,” Potts said. “When I spun out, I glazed the tires over and there wasn’t enough time to get them hot enough to clean them off.”
The team now shifts their focus to two important races over the next two weeks. The Go Nuclear Late Model Series invades the Brighton native’s home track on Saturday, June 25. Potts earned a sixth-place finish with the tour at Utica-Rome Speedway on April 24.
“It’s fun, but you have to qualify in. I suspect more than 24 cars will be there, so we’ll have to race our way in. It weighs on you harder at home,” Potts explained. “This will be just heads up and race. There’s no worrying about points. It’s a money race.”
In two weeks time, Brighton’s annual Canada Day championships will see drivers battle for double points. It will be a challenging night with time trials a factor for qualifying.
“That’s going to be important,” Potts said emphatically. “The time trials helps us out though. We’re debating what car to bring out. If I haven’t got this Longhorn figured out, we may go back to the Rocket car for time trial night.”
Hot laps and time trials for Saturday’s Go Nuclear Late Model Series race will begin at 6:00pm with the first race of the night scheduled for 7:00pm. See www.brightonspeedway.ca for further event details.
