OAKLAND, Ont. – June 20, 2016 – The Insta-Insulation Motorsports Team turned in another exciting trio of performances on Friday night at Ohsweken Speedway with two top-five finishes and a top-10.
In Crate Sprint Car competition, Brad Herron piloted the No.12 Miska Trailer Factory/Climatizer Cellulose car to a third-place finish while Alex Schuts drove his Elastochem/Middleport Mechanical No.5 to a career-best eighth-place result. Herron also won his first Top Gun award of the season as the division’s top qualifier in heat race action.
“That set the tone for the night,” Herron said. “We were the first feature (instead of last) so it was a bit of a different approach. We knew we had to set the car up a little bit different. We made an educated guess and the car was dynamite. I couldn’t have asked for it to be any better.”
The podium finish is Herron’s fourth top-five finish in five starts this season. He has finished no worse than sixth. As a result, Herron is just four points off the division point lead entering the final week of June competition.
“I had second, but a little bit of tire spin coming off turn four for the checkered flag and that’s all it takes sometimes,” Herron said. “It’s hard not to pay attention (to the points). It’s only June and there’s still a lot of racing left. You try not to focus on that. You just keep doing what you’re doing. Hopefully we can keep stringing these top-fives together, because consistency wins championships.”
Schuts, meanwhile, was thrilled with his season-high and career-best finish of eighth.
“I really enjoyed that run. The best part was there was still a lot for me to do with the car the way it was setup. We found something,” Schuts explained.
“I’m the happiest I’ve been all season. Not because of the finish, but I knew there was a lot of car there and if I was just a little more aggressive we probably would have finished better. I think I could have passed a couple more cars,” Schuts continued.
Karl Sault’s strong start to the 2016 season continued on Friday night with his second consecutive runner-up finish. The driver of the Great Lakes Brewery/Waterous Holden No.81 started 18th and drove to the second position by the time the checkered flag waved on the 20-lap main event.
“It was a good race. The track was a bit slick, but I was able to hook it up,” Sault said. “I managed to pass some cars on the outside at the beginning and then at the end I was down on the inside.”
Sault ran in the third spot for several laps and couldn’t track down race leader Ryan Dinning once he took the second position.
“I was slowly catching Ryan, but he had already checked out and I ran out of laps,” Sault concluded.
Sault has only finished outside the top three once this season. His strong start through five weeks has placed him second in the championship standings, 14 markers behind point leader Dave Bailey.
“It’s always nice to get a top-three and have the sponsors names up front,” smiled Sault. “We’ll get the win eventually. It’s going to come.”
The entire Insta-Insulation Motorsports team returns to action on Friday, June 24 for Ohsweken Speedway’s Sports Team Night presented by Pinty’s Delicious Foods. Race time is 7:30pm at the Six Nations area oval.
