ORO STATION, Ont. – June 21, 2016 – Tyler Hawn hit his first valley of the season in OSCAAR Super Late Model competition on Saturday night at Flamboro Speedway. Hawn suffered damage in his heat race that ended his night prematurely despite a promising start. Regardless, he is motivated for the return next month.
The race started two days early for Hawn, who paid a visit to chassis guru Brian MacDonald with hopes of improving on his fourth-place finish that started the season.
“We fixed some issues from the previous race and re-scaled it. Every adjustment went through him,” Hawn said, complimenting MacDonald’s knowledge.
Hawn was happy with his Fox’s Bakery/Atlas Bath Centre/TSS Top Shops No.42 from the moment he unloaded from the trailer.
“The day started well. In practice, we made some adjustments and the car was great. I started our first heat inside pole. I jumped out to the lead until Shane Maginnis passed me. I ended up finishing second,” Hawn said detailing the first heat.
The day deteriorated in the second heat, however. The invert meant Hawn started towards the rear of the field and, unfortunately, was caught in an incident involving two competitors.
“Maginnis got in to Glenn (Watson). Glenn spun and I had nowhere to go. I hit his left front wheel, which destroyed my rad box. We spent the rest of the night trying to fix it so we could get out for the feature,” Hawn explained. “We tried a ton of different things, but we couldn’t get it fixed, so we had to start and park.”
Hawn managed to start the feature race and was credited with an eighth-place finish. Nonetheless, Hawn is taking positives from his second race this season.
“It was better than last time. Who knows where we could have been. It was a top-five car for sure,” Hawn said. “We got some good notes from earlier in the day. We can always go back and look at those to see what we did.”
The first DNF of the year won’t be something Hawn hangs his head about. Instead, it’ll be the biggest motivating factor as he works toward a return to Flamboro on July 9.
“Every race you want to improve. I was hoping to improve on the first race. To get shut down with some bad luck sucks. It was a racing deal. It could always be worse,” Hawn added. “We’ll just do our normal routine, repair the damage and come back even stronger.”
