by Tommy Goudge (June 22, 2016) – Caistor Centre, Ontario – Jamie Turner and sons Cory and Ryan recorded several good results last Friday and Saturday with their Sprint Cars. They have another doubleheader on their schedule this weekend, and will also welcome back a teammate.
Friday found all three Turners racing at Ohsweken Speedway. Cory won his heat race with his Hill’s Racing #97 and drew the pole position for the A-Feature, while Jamie finished 3rd in his heat race with his Insta-Panels #11 and drew 3rd for the A-Feature. Ryan admitted to making a “driver error” with his Aces Bar & Grill #91 in his heat race, which gave him the 17th starting spot for the A-Feature.
Cory fell back to 3rd early in the 20 lap A-Feature before regaining the 2nd position from Dave Dykstra on lap 7. He maintained his position until Glenn Styres stole the runner-up spot with 2 laps remaining, but Cory was able to come home with a podium finish.
Jamie also fell back early in the race, eventually racing for the 8th position with Jake Brown. He was running 9th when Dykstra had problems on the last lap, allowing Jamie to cross the finish line back in 8th.
Ryan charged through the field when the green flag dropped, and got into 5th just before the halfway mark. He ran in the 6th spot for the remainder of the race, but took the checkered flag in 5th thanks to Dykstra’s problem.
“Since we were starting way back in the pack, we tried some different things on the car and it seemed to work,” Ryan noted. “We were fast early on, but started to lose side bite late in the race. Very happy with our run in the A tonight!”
Cory traveled to Waynesfield, Ohio on Saturday for a National Racing Alliance event with Hill’s Racing teammate Alex Hill on Saturday, while Jamie and Ryan went in the opposite direction to compete with the Southern Ontario Sprints tour at Brighton Speedway.
Cory advanced from 5th to race for the 2nd spot in his heat race but ended up back in 5th at the finish, which landed him 15th to start his first A-Feature at Waynesfield. He was able to maintain his position for most of the race until teammate Hill got by, and he settled for 16th.
Both Jamie and Ryan advanced in their heat races, as Ryan took 4th and Jamie 3rd. Jamie started 2nd in the A-Feature and led early in the race until eventual winner Mitch Brown got by him in traffic. Jamie eventually took a 3rd place finish, while Ryan advanced from 8th to chase Jamie to the checkered flag in 4th.
“The cushion hung on all race, making the top the place to be” Ryan observed. “Different from what we usually see at Brighton. (We’re) happy with how the cars went tonight, but need to find a little more speed.”
The team has a doubleheader weekend on tap with a Friday race at Ohsweken, followed by Saturday’s Gary Cunningham Memorial for the Empire Super Sprints tour at Merrittville Speedway. They will also welcome back their friend and teammate Havard Daniels, who has returned from his native New Zealand to spend part of the summer racing with Team Turner in Canada.
Jamie continues to lead the SOS championship standings, with Ryan 14 points behind him in 2nd. Cory is 4th in the Ohsweken championship standings, while Ryan is 6th, and Jamie is 10th.
