OAKLAND, Ont. (June 27, 2016) – The Insta-Insulation motorsports team was back in action last Friday night at Ohsweken Speedway and came away with a pair of top-five finishes. Brad Herron led the way in his Miska Trailer Factory/Climatizer Cellulose No.12 with a third-place podium finish.
Herron started the night with a heat race win and earned the Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance Top Gun award with the fastest lap of any driver in heat race competition, lapping the 3/8-mile oval in 15.966 seconds. Herron battled with Ryan Hunsinger for second throughout the feature but settled for third on a very slick racetrack.
“It was a carbon copy of the week before for us,” Herron said. “Hunsinger and I had a good battle side-by-side. We were going at it for second for about five laps. I cleared him, but the track was done. Hunsinger got back under me on lap 14 and then he took off. It was a good solid night. We can’t ask for more.”
Herron has now rattled off three consecutive top-five finishes and has not finished worse than sixth in six races this season. The veteran Crate Sprint Car driver believes he’s on the cusp of a trip to Mobil 1 Victory Lane.
“We’ve got some momentum now. Each week you get a little more confident. I’m glad we’ve been able to start this strong. If we can keep stringing these top-threes, or even top-fives together, than I think consistency will pay off,” Herron said. I’m sure there’s a win coming. We’re so close.”
Alex Schuts drove the Insulthane Extreme Spray Foam/Middleport Mechanical No.5 Crate Sprint car to an 11th-place finish after earning a fourth-place result in his heat race earlier in the night.
“I don’t really solicit advice and he hasn’t really asked for it. I don’t have to tell him anything,” Herron said of his rookie teammate Schuts. “He’s starting to understand you have to finesse these cars a little bit and sometimes slower is faster.”
In Thunder Stock completion, Karl Sault rallied from a sixth-place heat finish and raced to the front of the field in the 20-lap main event. His Great Lakes Brewery/Waterous Holden No.81 sat second for most of the race behind leader Ryan Dinning. However, Sault’s power plant reached it’s expiration date on the final lap, forcing him to settle for fourth.
“In our feature we just slowly picked our way up to the front, passing cars one at a time. I was running second behind (Ryan) Dinning. I was waiting for him to slip up to get under him, but the race was over before you knew it,” Sault said, adding the engine damage was likely serious enough to require a new replacement.
Sault has finished outside the top-five just once so far this season with handful of podium finishes to his credit. He, too, believes a checkered flag is on the horizon.
“It’ll take time, but we’ll get up there. Once the timing’s there, we’ll hopefully get up front and get around the faster cars. It’s tricky getting around them because typically they don’t slip up,” Sault explained.
