By Randy Spencer (Flamboro Speedway PR) – Day two of racing this weekend at Bennett Chevrolet Flamboro Speedway saw round two of four of the Flamboro Speedway Enduro Series taking place.
Nineteen cars were signed in for this one and the green flag would drop at 2pm. Flamboro Pure Stock driver Wayde Thorne was up front beside the 93 of Peter Vyn. Thorne led lap one but on lap two winner in round one Rodney Rutherford got by Thorne as he went high in turn two and Rutherford was gone and on a mission. Rutherford, Thorne and the 05 of Pete Reid were breaking away and the the 148 of Brandon Durdle and 30 of Robert Downey were the cork in the bottle of the rest of the pack. By lap seven it was Rutherford and Reid in a close battle and the would begin to lap the rest of the field. Reid seemed to have something for Rutherford early on as Reid would take the lead for a short time. By lap thirty it was Reid in first followed by Rutherford, Mike Jennings and another Flamboro Mini Stock veteran “The Rabbit” Rob Hoskins.
Lap 34 saw the leader Reid shooting steam and water out from his hood. Off he went to the pits for repairs and Rutherford took the lead. He would increase his lead to a half track in no time. Lap fifty it was Rutherford, Hoskins and Josh Shantz battling it out. As the race approached half way it was still Rutherford out front followed by a new second place car, John Shaw. Yes one of those Shaws. It’s a big family with racers in every decade since Flamboro opened. Hoskins was third followed by another former Flamboro racer and Ohsweken champion, Karl Sault.
Just over half way the 801 of Shaw was right there on Rutherford’s bumper challenging for the lead. But a closer check with their scorers it showed that Shaw was down a lap as Rutherford lapped the field earlier in the race. The first and only red of the event came on lap 143 as the 184 slowed to a stop at the exit of four and the track entrance as he tagged the wall. As the race wore on Shaw made his way past Rutherford but talking with Rodney after the race, he saw the scoreboard hadn’t changed so he backed off saved his car for the last 20 laps. It appeared that smoke was coming from the right front. Nothing was rubbing but it turned out to be lack of brakes but he held on and Rodney Rutherford was two for two picking up another first place cheque. John Shaw came home second, Karl Sault was third, Bryan Bateson was fourth with Rob Hoskins fifth.
The Figure Eight race had just four cars left that made the green. Chris Rivers and Wayde Thorne dropped out early and Rodney Rutherford battled Karl Sault but as the checkers flew it was Sault winning. Congratulations to all the competitors for a fun time and see you Sunday August 28th for round three of four in the Flamboro Speedway Enduro series.
