by Tommy Goudge (June 28, 2016) – Caistor Centre, Ontario – Team Turner Racing had four drivers in action last weekend, as Jamie Turner and sons Cory and Ryan were joined by their New Zealand teammate Havard Daniels. Ryan came within just 2 laps of his first Sprint Car A-Feature win on Saturday.
First on the weekend agenda was a stop at the team’s Friday night home at Ohsweken Speedway. Ryan and Cory both won their heat races, while Jamie and Havard finished 6th and 5th in theirs.
An extremely slick track surface greeted the team at feature time, with Ryan starting 2nd, Cory 8th, Havard 15th, and Jamie 16th after winning the B-Feature. Ryan hung on to finish 5th with Cory right behind him in 6th, while Jamie moved up to 10th, and Havard came home 16th in his first Sprint Car feature in more than a year.
“Took me a couple of laps to find the line and hit my marks in the heat,” Ryan noted. “Once we got the car rolling, it was a rocket ship! The crew gave me a great race car once again, making it easy to walk away with my first heat win of the year. In the feature we were a little loose, but overall happy with another top five.”
Saturday found the team back at the Merrittville Speedway near St. Catharines, Ontario for the second time this season. A talented field turned up for the annual Gary Cunningham Memorial for the Empire Super Sprints tour.
Ryan drove from 6th to 2nd in his heat race at Merrittville, while Cory finished 5th in his heat, Jamie took 6th, and Havard fought a wing slider problem to finish 8th. Further mechanical problems caused a DNF for Havard in the B-Feature.
Ryan started 5th in the A-Feature, while Cory and Jamie started side-by-side in the 9th row. Jamie advanced from 18th to 9th, while Cory drove from 17th to 11th. Ryan swapped the lead with Jordan Poirier early in the 25 lap race before taking the spot definitively on lap 9.
Ryan’s first Sprint Car win was snatched away by Matt Tanner with just 2 laps remaining, but he did hang on to take his best career Sprint Car finish in 2nd.
“Coming home from Merrittville with a career best finish in a 360 Sprint Car shows we’re headed in the right direction,” Ryan observed. “Crew had the car working on the bottom all night, making it easy to wheel. Even though we came up little short, I’m very satisfied with our performance tonight!”
The team will be in action this Friday, July 1 when the Southern Ontario Sprints tour visits Ohsweken Speedway to take on the track’s weekly 360 Sprint Car racers.
Jamie leads the SOS championship standings, with Ryan right behind him in 2nd heading into Friday’s race. Cory is 4th in the Ohsweken championship standings, while Ryan is 5th, and Jamie is 10th.
