OHSWEKEN, Ont. (July 25, 2016) – John Waters of Whitesville, NY made the most of his front row starting position and led all 30 laps for his first career win at Ohsweken Speedway on Mondaynight. The win came in the Humber Nurseries Northern Crate Nationals and was Waters’ second win on the Go Nuclear tour in 2016 after winning at Utica-Rome Speedway on April 24.
“It’s always fun to come run with these Go Nuclear guys. Greg (Belyea) and Shayne (Tenace) do a great job with this deal. This track is amazing. Last year was a heartbreaker and we had a racing altercation that took us out of contention. Tonight, it was nice to stay up front,” Waters said in victory lane.
Kyle Sopaz (No.12 Lots and Lines) led the field to the green flag alongside Waters (No.11w Troup’s Creek Auto Parts). Waters jumped to the early lead as Sopaz protected the second spot from Dennis Lunger Jr. (No.71L Schwartz Construction).
The race was slowed on lap four when seventh-starting AJ Kingsley (No.9k Pit Stop Convenience) got crossed up in turn two and spun. The restart saw Charlie Sandercock (No.57 Bellevue Fabricating) make a charge forward as he quickly drove to third past Lunger and then took second from Chris Fleming (No.10 Hottenstein Bus Service) on lap nine. Sopaz, meanwhile, slipped to eighth.
A second caution occurred on lap nine when John Pinnsonneault (No.0 Chatham Pro Shop) spun at the bottom of turn four and tagged the inside wall, ending his night.
Waters pulled away from Sandercock on the restart while Fleming battled Phil Potts (No.29 Brighton Recycling) side-by-side for third.
“When I saw Charlie was behind me, I knew I had nothing to worry about. If he got me, he got me (it would be clean), that’s how it would have went,” Waters said of his restart battles with Sandercock’s No.57.
At the halfway point, Potts held the third spot, but Fleming remained in close pursuit. Sunday night winner Brandon Mowat (No.46 Target Fabrication) raced to the fifth position after starting 11th.
Waters continued to pace the field in traffic as Fleming took third back from Potts on lap 18. With three laps to go, Waters made a daring three-wide move between lapped cars to continue separating himself from Sandercock.
Sandercock made a late-race charge at Waters, but the No.11w never wavered in his line to become the second winner in two series events at Ohsweken.
“We’re happy with the weekend and two podium finishes,” Sandercock said following his second-place run. “John’s usually wicked fast wherever he goes. He’s a tough competitor and there’s no hard feelings finishing second to him.”
Mowat, however, made the most of the final two laps and used the bottom lane to steal fourth from Potts at the finish. Fleming claimed a third-place finish, his best run of the season on the tour and his first career podium result at Ohsweken.
“That was a great run for us. We had a good car all night, set fast time, won our heat race. It was a night and day difference from last season. I think we ended up about 18th. Tonight, the track was really wide and really racey. It fit my driving style,” Fleming said following his first podium and top-5 finish this year with the series.
Fleming also set the pace in time trials with a fast overall lap of 16.645 seconds around the high-banked 3/8-mile oval. Heat race winners were Fleming, Potts and Sam Pennacchio (No.311 Duguay Haulage).
The series returns to action on Sunday, August 14 in a return visit to Utica-Rome Speedway for a make-up event following a rainout at the same track on May 22. Event information will be available at www.gonuclearlatemodelseries.com.
