by Tommy Goudge (August 11, 2016) – Caistor Centre, Ontario – The Team Turner Racing Sprint Car drivers had a schedule change and got rained on again last weekend, but still managed to get one race in.
Friday found Jamie Turner and sons Cory and Ryan at back at Ohsweken Speedway, along with teammate Havard Daniels. They were part of a tough field of 35 cars trying to qualify for the challenge race between the Empire Super Sprints and Ohsweken’s home track racers.
Ryan won his heat race from outside the front row with the Aces Bar & Grill #91, with Havard finishing behind him in 4th with the Plazek Auto Recyclers #9nz, and Jamie struggled to finish with a deflated right rear tire on his Insta-Panels #11. Cory started 3rd in his heat race, but he stopped on the track after a huge wheelie, and ended up 7th with his Hill’s Racing #97.
Havard finished 4th in the Dash race, while rain fell on Jamie and Cory after 6 of 10 laps were complete in the B-Feature. With only 2 transfer spots available in the B-Feature, Cory started 7th and was up to 3rd when the rain fell, while Jamie was up to 9th from 12th.
“Even though the race got rained out, we were very happy with the 91,” Ryan exclaimed. “It didn’t feel quite right in hot laps, but the crew went to work, making it one of the best-handling cars I have driven all year. We were very excited for the feature, until the rain hit.”
The rained-out A-Feature will be made up on Friday, September 16 during the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals weekend, with Ryan scheduled to start 9th, and Havard starting 16th. The B-Feature is considered a complete race, but Cory will be the first alternate if any qualified A-Feature cars do not return for the makeup race.
Brighton Speedway’s Southern Ontario Sprints event was originally on the team’s schedule for Saturday, but a change of plans found them idle before heading to Humberstone Speedway for aSunday SOS event.
Cory and Ryan started on the front row of their heat race at Humberstone, and Ryan got the better of his brother to take the win. Cory settled for the runner-up spot, but had better luck in the draw for A-Feature starting spots, as he got the pole while Ryan got 5th. Jamie finished 4th in his heat to start 10th in the A-Feature, while Havard finished 5th in his heat to start 14th in the A-Feature.
Cory led the first 17 laps of the A-Feature until eventual winner Dylan Westbrook got by. He held off Ryan Susice to take a runner-up finish.
Ryan lost his front wing on the third lap of the A-Feature and was forced to re-start at the tail of the field. He recovered to finish 9th.
Jamie advanced to finish 8th in the A-Feature, while Havard also advanced to finish 11th.
“It was good to go back to Humberstone after racing the Thunder Stocks and Sportsman there weekly,” Ryan noted of the team’s past seasons at the Port Colborne track. “Right out of the gate it was like we never missed a beat, winning the heat and fast in the feature until the front wing tore off. The car was still fast even though we were missing down-force on the front of the car. Also, a very strong run from (Cory) leading a lot of laps.”
The team will be back in action this Friday at Ohsweken Speedway’s Art Hill Memorial Night. Cory is currently 5th in the Ohsweken championship standings, but just 8 points out of 3rd. Ryan is 8th in the standings, while Jamie is 11th.
