MILGROVE, Ont. – September 3, 2016 – The Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds returned to competition at Flamboro Speedway on Saturday, September 3. Eleven cars were signed in for the 13th round of action and twin 20-lap features on Labour Day weekend.
In the first 20-lap affair, John Karley and Ian McIntyre brought the field to the green flag. A tight battle up front saw the two drivers run side-by-side for the opening two laps until Karley spun in turn two to bring out the first yellow of the race. McIntyre assumed the lead on the restart until a confusing moment occurred out of turn two.
Drivers were told over their radio caution had waved and McIntyre slowed. The race, however, stayed green and Steve Trendell and Brian Atkinson split the McIntyre No.5 to take the top two spots. Atkinson took the lead in the bottom lane and pulled point leader Jason Keen along with him to second.
Caution waved for the second time on lap eight for debris in turn one. Atkinson had a strong restart, but Keen maintained pace. Two laps later, Trendell tried to take second, but Keen replied with a bold move of his own. Trendell spun to avoid hitting the left-rear of Keen and collected Ian McIntyre in the process. Atkinson was strong again on the restart and held off Keen over the remainder of the race to earn his fourth victory of the season over Keen, Trendell, Cassidy March and Jeremy Barton.
The second feature of the night had Amanda Stoner and Cassidy March on the front row for the final 20 laps of the night. The initial start was called back and the two drivers made contact on the second try. Steve Trendell took advantage and darted to the lead. Jason Keen found his way to second and the two drivers paced the field until a lap seven caution for Cassidy March.
Trendell restarted well to retain the top spot and pulled ahead of Keen. The final 13 laps were all Trendell as he drove to his club-leading seventh victory this season ahead of Keen, Atkinson, McIntyre, and John Karley.
The point battle will be close over the final two weeks with just seven points separating Jason Keen and Steve Trendell for the club crown. The Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds are off this weekend before returning to action on Saturday, September 17. They will wrap up the season back at Flamboro on September 24.
