With top-five finishes on a weekly basis, everything came together this past weekend for Rick Spencer-Walt as he was crowned the 2016 Peterborough Speedway Limited Late Model Champion.
“Winning the championship is a big achievement for our small team,” he said. “The work my guys put in this year meant a lot to me. Glad we could bring it home for them!”
Spencer-Walt was able to pick up the crown in style, scoring the feature victory this past weekend to mark his fifth victory of the season.
“Winning on final night was the best way to go out, for sure,” he said. “Points were tight going into the feature. I knew I had to do something; I drove that car into the ground to get that win.”
It’s worth nothing in 11 races races this season (eight at Peterborough, two at Sunset, one at Sauble), Spencer-Walt has five wins and 11 top-five finishes. Notably, the highlight of the year thus far being the victory at the Chase for the Colours, which will allow him to lead the field to the green at the Autumn Colours Classic in October.
“Biggest highlight for our team is sitting on the pole for the Autumn Colours Classic,” he said. “We have something to prove and hopefully we can close this year. Think our speed out there is going to surprise some people when they get there with us!”
Unfortunately, the year hasn’t all been perfect as Spencer-Walt’s OSCAAR Super Late Model debut this past Saturday didn’t go as planned. After finishing third and fourth in his heats, Spencer-Walt found himself out of the race on the opening lap due to being caught up in a wreck.
“Just got caught in other’s crap,” he said. “I felt like J.R (Fitzpatrick) had given me a great car and we didn’t get to show it. We’re not done there yet. After driving those weapons once, I’m getting back in to another as soon as I can – so much fun.”
With a solid season under his belt, Spencer-Walt heads into the playoff part of the short track season confident, looking for a strong run at both Sunset Speedway’s Velocity 250 on September 24-25 and at the Autumn Colours Classic on October 7-9.
“I think going into playoff season, we just want to maintain our consistent runs,” he said. “Top fives are always good, but we need that breakout invitational win. Sunset is stacked and it will be tough there, but we have something for these boys when they come home to play with us at Peterborough!”
