PICTON, Ont. – September 21, 2016 – Tim Kerr ran a Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modified doubleheader last weekend with stops at his home Brewerton Speedway and a first-career start at Weedsport Speedway. The two tracks each provided a different set of challenges for the Picton, Ont. pilot.
Friday’s race pitted the Super DIRTcar Series’ best against Brewerton’s top weekly drivers. Kerr’s night got off to a slow start with an eighth-place time trial effort in his group and a 10th-place tally in his heat. The team battled what they thought was a motor issue and later discovered it was a carburetor problem.
“Friday night was a little rough. We battled some motor issues all night, which wasn’t a lot of fun. At tour races you don’t need those problems off the start. You need to be good out of the box,” Kerr said. “Brewerton was heavier than it is typically and being down horsepower wasn’t helping any.”
Kerr ran seventh in the B-Main and unfortunately did not qualify for the main event. Saturday, however, brought the team to Weedsport Speedway for their first ever visit to the recently renovated 3/8-mile track and the carburetor issues were solved.
“It’s a gorgeous facility. The racetrack is definitely a little bit different. It’s tricky,” Kerr said. “I followed a couple of different guys in hot laps to see what they did there. I just had to stick it in there and hope for the best.”
The 100-lap races are a different challenge from the usual 35-lap weekly distance, but the majority of the preparation remains the same, Kerr said.
“There’s a little more you have to prepare for with our tires. The shows we run on a weekly basis are just as tough as that show. Being at Brewerton and Fulton every week, we’re pretty much racing the same guys,” Kerr said. “The biggest thing is time trials. If you don’t time trial well in these shows you’re in trouble.”
Kerr was very strong in time trials on Saturday night, laying down the second fastest lap in his group and earned a runner-up finish in his heat to qualify for the redraw. He pulled the outside front row for the 100-lap main event and lined up alongside friend Mat Williamson.
Kerr jumped out to an early lead in his Bronskill Group/Home Hardware Picton No.07. A restart on lap 22 following the second caution of the race allowed Tim Fuller to gain the advantage and contact shortly after damaged the front end of Kerr’s car.
“We had a little contact early and I think it messed up the front end a little bit. It got tight and used up the right front. It quit turning and I had to ride it out,” he explained.
Kerr finished 18th.
“We had never stepped foot in that place, so I don’t consider it a terrible night. Obviously I’d like the end result to have been a little bit better,” Kerr said. “All in all I was pretty happy.”
Kerr’s next two races will be at Fulton Speedway for the Outlaw 200 and “Win and You’re In” race for Super DIRT Week on October 8.
“We’re off this weekend and then we’re getting ready for the Outlaw 200 at Fulton. I always enjoy that weekend race. If all goes well we’re going to head back,” he explained.
