By Tommy Goudge (Sunday, September 18, 2016) OHSWEKEN, Ontario – 65 360 Sprint Cars returned to Ohsweken Speedway on Sunday, September 18 to compete in the 12th annual Arrow Express Canadian Sprint Car Nationals. 30 of those drivers qualified for the 35 lap A-Feature, and Kokomo, Indiana’s Parker Price-Miller was the driver standing in Mobil 1 Victory Lane after another thrilling CSCN race garnered him a $12,000 payday. Ryan Dinning was the Ohsweken Speedway Thunder Stock victor, while Mack DeMan and Jon Janssens won Dash For Cash events for the Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Cars and HRW Automotive Mini Stocks, respectively.

CANADIAN SPRINT CAR NATIONALS 360 SPRINT CARS (65 entries)
Parker Price-Miller and 2014 Canadian Sprint Car Nationals winner Jessica Friesen began the 35 lap A-Feature on the front row. The teammates for the night traded the lead on several occasions, while three-time CSCN winner Steve Poirier made it a three-way race for the $12,000 winner’s prize. Price-Miller generally stuck to the high groove, while Friesen was down low or in the middle, and Poirier entered the fray at the halfway mark.
The race was slowed by a yellow flag on lap 9 when Alex Vigneault hit the outside wall on the frontstretch, just as the leaders were about to take on heavy traffic. The yellow quickly turned to red when Brandon Wimmer rolled over on the backstretch. Another yellow flag slowed the action 10 laps later when Chris Steele hit the inside wall, which resulted in a bent wheel and flat tire.
The last 16 laps of the race went by quickly, and Friesen saw both Price-Miller and Poirier get past her. Poirier threw repeated slide job attempts at the 19 year old driver, but Price-Miller withstood the barrage and pulled away to take the win. Poirier settled for the runner-up spot, followed by Friesen. 24th starter Chuck Hebing’s late charge almost resulted in a podium finish, but he settled for 4th after stealing that position from Dustin Daggett at the last minute.
2011 CSCN winner Sam Hafertepe Jr. charged from 19th to finish 6th, followed by 13th starter Coleman Gulick, Ryan Susice, Mitch Brown, and 27th starter and 2015 CSCN winner Bryan Howland.
The win brought some redemption for Price-Miller, who saw the 2015 CSCN win slip through his fingers in one of the closest finishes in Ohsweken Speedway history.
“I don’t know how I didn’t mess up those last five laps,” said the relieved driver in victory lane. “I was nervous the whole race. Jessica and Steve are obviously pretty good here. I was just doing everything I could to hold them off.
“We thought we had brake issues at the shop today, but we figured they were fine…then without about five laps to go they got really squishy, and I was having to use my wing and get the car sideways to slow me down. I saw Steve there a few times, but I was driving the crap out of it. I didn’t care what I had to do to win – Parked It For BC!”
Poirier was philosophical about his third runner-up finish at CSCN in the last four years.
“That was a fun race,” said the three-time CSCN winner. “At the beginning of the race I didn’t think I would have anything for Jessica or Parker, but in the middle of the race Parker went out of the track a little bit, and Jessica was starting to leave the bottom open, and my car was coming and I might have something for them. (Parker) raced me clean last year, so I was on the inside just leaving enough room for him to maneuver on the outside, but it was a pretty fun battle.”
Friesen led the most laps in the race, but settled for third place at the end. Though disappointed in the result, she was happy to be so competitive despite limited time racing this season.
“Third is obviously not really where we want to be, but we’ll take it,” said the 2014 CSCN winner. “I just need to run some more laps. It’s been awhile since I’ve been in a car – this was the fourth race out this year. We just got a little bit too free there at the end, and I needed to be able to move around, and just really couldn’t.”
