BRIGHTON, Ont. – October 17, 2016 – The on-track action for the 2016 season came to a conclusion at Brockville Ontario Speedway last Friday night for Phil Potts and the Fowl Mood Race Team. Potts drove to third-place finish in the season finale for the team and the Go Nuclear Late Model Series.
Potts started fourth in the 35-lap main event and quickly darted to second. He pressured Brandon Mowat all race long in the top lane of a very fast racetrack, but couldn’t find his way by. He slipped to third following a late race restart, but was still happy with the podium result.
“We’re very happy. The car was great, crew was great. We maybe should have been a little bit better. I’ve probably never had that much fun at Brockville,” Potts said of his Vanderlaan Building Products/Brighton Recycling/Indewey Excavating sponsored Longhorn Chassis.
“It was fast. I’m not sure I’ve ever raced Brockville when it stayed that fast all night.”
Potts tried a couple of times to use the bottom lane to take the lead from Mowat, but couldn’t muster the same momentum.
“You had to slow down so much to get down on the bottom that you lost speed. If the top hadn’t stayed as fast as it did, it would have been no problem,” Potts explained. “If I did get past him, I was going right back to the top. I was half a groove higher than Brandon.”
A sixth checkered flag would have been the perfect way to cap the season, but Potts and car owner Stuart Archer are still plenty happy to have solidified third in the Go Nuclear Series standings with the third-place effort.
“Stuart is very happy and the team is very happy. I would have liked to win Friday night because I know we had a car capable of it, but it’s a very good ending to the season,” Potts said. “Usually you come off at Brockville with every panel shredded to death and I’m not sure there’s a scuff on the car.”
Friday’s race marked the 23rd time Potts finished in the top-five this season in 28 starts. It was also the 27th time this year he finished in the top-10.
“This is our best season ever. It’s the consistency of it. I didn’t have to win every night, but I knew I was going to be a top car,” Potts said. “This year I never worried about going to other tracks and racing in. It didn’t matter what track I went to, I knew I was qualifying for the feature.”
“I knew the car and the crew knew what to do. Confidence this year was something we haven’t had in a while.”
Potts will receive recognition for his Go Nuclear Series efforts at the year-end banquet on November 19. He will be honoured for his Brighton Speedway championship at the track’s annual Night of Champions in the New Year.
