LUCAMA, NC – Rusty Daniels is winless on the 2017 season but the veteran racer is optimistic about changing that stat in Saturday’s Remember The Fallen 225 at Southern National Motorsports Park.
The 43-year-old from Alliance, North Carolina has every reason to feel optimistic about winning on Memorial Day Weekend. Last season, he swept a pair of Late Model races on Memorial Day Weekend and he says there’s a reason he gets hot during the summer months.
“Well, I know we run a lot better in the middle part of the year,” Daniels said. “I’m not saying it suits me better either way, we just get more track time than the winter time and it makes the car better. I think we get more laps under our belt and it helps get the car better for me.”
Daniels is currently third in points in the Late Model Stock Car division at Southern National Motorsports Park, trailing points leader Mason Diaz by 12 points and second place driver Jonathan Findley by three points.
“These young boys have some mighty good people behind them,” Daniels remarked. “We’ve made a few changes in the last couple weeks so I think we’ll be better. I’m excited about next weekend already.”
As Daniels hopes to improve his results and score victories, he also believes Diaz and Findley will have some troubles in the weeks and months ahead. With the championship in mind, Daniels expects to be able to capitalize on any issues the Mike Darne Racing duo has.
“Yeah, we’re going to close that points gap,” Daniels stated. “[Diaz and Findley] won’t run that good all year. It ain’t going to happen. They’ll make some mistakes. It’s going to change a little bit before long.”
Daniels has three career Late Model Stock Car wins at Southern National Motorsports Park – two wins last season on Memorial Day Weekend and a win in August 2015. Daniels has also scored several wins at Southern National Motorsports Park in a Limited Late Model.
Daniels will compete in twin Late Model Stock Car races in the Remember The Fallen 225 on Saturday, May 27th. In addition to Late Models, the event also features racing for the Chargers, Mini Stocks, U-CARs, Legends and Bandoleros. The race will commence at 7pm.
