On Friday, Austin Theriault left Pocono with an eighth-place finish and a 11o-point lead over Dalton Sargeant who finished fifth. Earlier this year when the series raced at Pocono in June, he pulled only a ninth-place finish which remains his worst finish this season.
“This has been statistically our toughest track and we really struggled to find speed and the balance.” Theriault told OnPitRoad.com following his 12th top-10 finish of the season.
Despite that ninth-place finish, Theriault has held the points lead since his victory at Daytona in February. The Fort Kent, ME native has visited victory lane three times this season and continues to push for more with the ultimate goal of a championship at the end of the season.
“If this is what we’re gonna go through this year I think it’s going to make our team stronger. Every successful team has bumps and challenges they have to go through but I feel like not a lot of people know but we’re doing a lot with a little bit.
“We don’t have the biggest budget, we don’t have the nicest hauler but I’ll tell you what, we have some of the hardest working individuals on all of the teams across the series,” Theriault said. “We’re just not gonna give up. We’re gonna work at these tracks in particular and see how we can be faster and this is what it’s gonna come down to.”
It’s coming down to Theriault vs. Cunningham Motorsports driver Sargeant for the championship with eight races remaining on the schedule. Riley Herbst has a 400 point deficit on the points leader sitting in third where he is looking to capitalize on any mistake either drivers make during this final stretch of races.
The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards heads to Winchester Speedway for the Winchester ARCA 200. It will be another first time visit behind the wheel of an ARCA car for the points leader but it hasn’t phased him this season.
