May 20, 2014. The opening event of the 2014 NASCAR Canadian Tire series looked to be a promising first outing for the driver of the #87 TSC Stores Ford Steven Mathews. The New Liskeard, ON driver showed plenty of speed and skill during the race but a mechanical failure would end their day early.
Two days of on-track action began with the #87 TSC Stores team chasing gremlins with the car and resulted in only a handful of practice laps during both sessions. Mathews was still able to come up with a 21st place qualifying effort after barely any time in the car.
With Mathews at the wheel the #87 TSC Stores Ford ran very well in the race and was quickly gaining positions. As pit stops began Mathews and teammate Joey McColm continued with their strategy to wait until later in the race to stop and made their way to the front of the field.
The two restarted on the front row on lap 16 and Mathews continued to show well in the #87 TSC Stores Ford.
However his fate would change in the late stages of the race as smoke began to come from the car. NASCAR officials order the team to pit road for inspection of the issue and an oil leak was found and the team unable to continue.
While unfortunate the day ended early the entire #87 TSC Stores Ford team is extremely optimistic about their next outing together at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on the Labour Day weekend.
“I can’t thank the whole #87 TSC Stores Ford team enough for their hard work. We had a tough start to the weekend and our race ended early, but this is a fast race car and I’m really excited about what we can accomplish next time out” said Mathews.
