By Randy Spencer – The first leg of the annual Grisdale Triple Crown series
for Late Models was the main event Saturday at Bennett Cheverolet Flamboro
Speedway. Another nice crowd and great weather made it a perfect night for
racing as the Late Models were joined by the Mini Stocks, Pure Stocks,
Thunder Cars and Pro 4 Modifieds.
Double heats for all divisions again and the winners were as follows. Pure
Stock winners were Shawn Taylor and Danny Shantz. Mini Stock wins went to
Blair Wickett, Mark Klotz and Mike Holmes with two. The Late Models had four
heats with wins going to Dale Shaw, Matt Pritiko, Jake Ott and Nick Roth.
Thunder Car wins went to Mike Gilmour, Shawn Arnott, Bob Chenoweth and Mark
Burbridge. Bill Pearsall and Dan Nanticoke were victorious in the Pro 4
Modified heats.
The Pure Stocks were the first feature of the night. Micheal Kenny and
Gillian Hils were on the poll for the 15 lap main event. Hils got out to a
fairly big lead early. Danny Shantz and Shawn Taylor were battling for
second and third and were gaining on Hils. On the last lap, Shantz made his
move going down the back stretch and managed to get by Hils and picked up
his second consecutive feature win.
The Mini Stocks were next with a couple young guns on the point. Blair
Wickett, who won a heat earlier was along side Hudson Nagy as they led the
field to green. Wickett shot out to a nice lead early and held it for the
first 14 laps. At the start of the evening, Mike Holmes and Russ Aicken were
tied a top the Point standings and were prepared to do battle once again.
They made some contact with each other in a heat earlier in the evening but
they were both far back in the pack in the feature, Aicken starting ninth
and Holmes, who was last week’s feature winner start at the tail end of the
pack in 16th. Aiken managed to make his way to the front pretty quick and
took over the lead from Wickett on lap 14. Holmes had further to go but made
it up to fourth by lap 10. Aicken was leading but got involved with lapped
traffic on lap 19 and the 42 of Rick Robinson got tangled with Aicken and
the two cars had to go to the back of the pack. Holmes had taken over the
lead when Aicken spun and after that Aicken was a man on mission for the
last six laps. A caution on lap 23 after a front stretch spin by the 03 of
Jake Gilbert tightened the field and a hungry Aicken up to fourth. An
exciting green, white, checker finish as Holmes held off Mark Klotz and Russ
Aicken for his fourth feature win of the year. Mark Klotz has been having a
great season as well finishing second after a third place finish in the
feature last weekend.
The 75 lap feature for Late Models was next and the cars and drivers lined
up on the front stretch for driver introductions. Matt Pritiko and Jake Ott
were the top qualifiers and were on the poll for the first Grisdale Triple
Crown race of 2014. Pritiko, who had a strong third place finish in the APC
100 a few weeks ago, picked up where he left off and led early on. Further
back in the pack, Shawn Chenoweth and Robbie Thompson were battling each
other hard, not willing to give an inch. On lap 12, the two came together
and around went Chenoweth and the two cars had to go to the back of the
pack. Several minor cautions made for some interesting restarts as Pritiko
had his hands full with Dale Shaw. Another caution on lap 18 as Thompson,
Chenoweth and Matt Lockwood got involved in turn three. Pritiko was still in
the lead with a battle for second and third between Shaw and David Elliott.
Elliott managed to get by Shaw on lap 21. The two battled back and forth
throughout the race. On lap 42, Shawn Chenoweth slowed and came to a stop in
turn three bringing out the caution. He got the car re-fired, headed for the
pits and managed to make it back as the field once again took green. Pritiko
was still leading with David Elliott and Dale Shaw on his bumper as the race
continued keeping everyone on the edge of their seats. A caution on lap 73
set up another green, white, checker feature. Shaw and Elliott did
everything they could to get past Pritiko but it wasn’t meant to be as
Pritiko led flag to flag and crossed the line first picking up the feature
win. Dale Shaw had a great race and was never far from the lead and came
home second. David Elliott and Shawn Chenoweth were battling each other hard
and Elliott inched over the line for third just ahead of Chenoweth who
finished fourth. Nick Roth had a solid race as well coming home fifth. An
awesome and exciting race, can’t wait for the second leg of the Grisdale
Triple Crown on Saturday, July 5th. Pritiko picked up a beautiful art glass
trophy made by Paull Rodrigue of Dundas.
Mike Gilmour and Bobby Mercer led the Thunder Cars to green for the 25 lap
feature. Brad Collison had a flat tire on lap one. Mercer and Mitch
Milljanovic got tied up coming down the front stretch and both spun wildly
to the infield. Bob Chenoweth led from the beginning and picked up his first
feature win of 2014.
The last race of the night was the 15 lap feature for the Pro 4 Modifieds.
Linc Erison and Dan Petit were on the poll. Bill Pearsall had some troubles
and wasn’t able to finish the race. Brian Nanticoke had some troubles in the
first heat and wasn’t able to make it out for heat two. But when it cam down
to it, Brian Nantitoke battled brother Dan and held him off for the feature
win.
That wrapped up another exciting night of racing. Please make plans to join

Late Models will be joined by the Klotz Auto Repair & Engine Machine Shop
Mini Stocks, the Lucas Oil Canadian Vintage Modifieds and Lucas Oil Can Am
Midgets. The Highwaymen Car Club from Kitchener, Ontario will also be on
hand for their annual Cruise Night.
The club will display a number of street rods, vintage and classic vehicles
in the parking lot near the main entrance. They will also be on the track
during intermission. Bring your cameras and come a little early to have a
peak into the past!
Pit gates open at 4pm, Grandstands at 5pm and green flag flies at 6:30 pm.
Admission prices for the grandstands are as follows. Adult $14.60, Senior &
Student $12.00, Children (12 and under) $3.00, Family Ticket (2 Adults and
up to 4 children) $32.00. HST EXTRA. Admission price to the Pits is $35.00
for non members, Members (with pit pass) $30.00 HST is included. ($25.00
member pit pass entitles you to $5.00 discount and applies to all 2014
events including specials) NEW Pit Memberships will be available at Pit
Gates.
