After a stellar season that led him to the championship, Cayden Lapcevich would cap off the year in style by winning the Velocity 250 Super Stock 50-lap feature at Sunset Speedway.
After running the qualifying heats on Saturday, the top 16 drivers were set. The rest of the field – 10 drivers – would be determined from a pair of consolation races.
There’d be one quick caution at lap six as Bryan Penny would send Jim Morrison around. Shawn Chenoweth would score the victory to transfer as he was in the consolation race after posting a DNF in heat one due to a fuel leak. Shawn Goggins, Todd Davenport, Paul Maltese and Ryan Semple would transfer while Gary A. from Delaware, Nick Tooley, Steve Slaughter, Morrison and Penny would be sent home.
The second consolation race would turn into ‘who can wreck the other guy for fifth?’ race as the fifth spot or higher transferred to the main event. The twists and turns started right away as Donny Munce would turn Tyler Liscum in turn one, on lap one. There’d be a complete restart, sending both drivers to the back as they had started 2nd and 4th before their contact. Then on lap three, Zack Casemore and Kevin Gallant would get tangled in turn three as Gallant had mechanical issues with his ride; Gallant would done for the afternoon. Under caution, Wally Everingham would get into the back of Liscum’s car – by accident – before pulling off of the track. On the white flag lap, the third caution would fly when Casemore would spin Liscum for the ‘magic’ fifth spot. Liscum would then retaliate and as a result, Sunset Speedway officials blackflagged both drivers for rough driving. On the green white checkered, well, let’s just say same story, new players. Coltin Everingham would get into Brad Lavalle for the ‘magic’ fifth spot, resulting in Lavalle backing into the backstretch wall; Coltin would receive the blackflag for rough driving. As a result, there were only five drivers left on track so therefore Sunset threw the checkered flag and all running would transfer. Dennis Cybalski would pick up the win ahead of Mike Meyer, the 41, Munce and Lavalle.
Come feature time, Cayden Lapcevich would start pole ahead of Randy Rusnell, Chad Eden, Jordan Lawrence, Lane Zardo, Ross Evans, Paul Geniole Jr., Jordan Latimer, Matt Bentley, Ron Lawrence, Vaughn Lawrence, Adam Martin, Ken Grubb, Ryan Semple, Johnny Morrison and Joe Adams.
The race would start off with a caution right on lap one as Grubb, Shawn Goggins, Ron Lawrence and Vaughn Lawrence got together. On the restart, Lapcevich would grab the lead with Eden and Zardo battling for second behind him. Zardo would grab second on lap seven ahead of Eden, Lawrence and Rusnell. The caution flag would then wave for a second time at lap 16 for debris. With 34 laps to go, Lapcevich led Zardo, Lawrence, Eden, Rusnell, Geniole Jr., Bentley, Grubb, Chenoweth, Adams, Latimer, Martin, Cybalski, Evans, Meyer and Davenport.
Lapcevich would get a good restart to stay ahead of Zardo, Lawrence and Eden while Geniole Jr. was able to get by Rusnell for fifth before the caution flew at lap 20 for Goggins, Meyer, Davenport and Ron Lawrence getting together in turn one.
Another well-played restart for Lapcevich as he stayed ahead of Zardo while Geniole Jr. and Chenoweth would both get by Eden for position as Rusnell continued to drop back. Lawrence had a good run going, keeping himself in the third spot behind Lapcevich and Zardo, though saw his day come to an end at lap 24 when the motor blew up.
The final restart of the day would be well played by Cayden Lapcevich as he grabbed the victory to bookend his championship season with victories. Lane Zardo would finish second while Shawn Chenoweth was able to get by Paul Geniole Jr. in the late going to finish third. Randy Rusnell would finish fifth, followed by Chad Eden, Ken Grubb, Ryan Semple, Joe Adams, Jordan Latimer, Adam Martin, Johnny Morrison, Dennis Cybalski, Ron Lawrence, Shawn Goggins, Vaughn Lawrence, Matt Bentley and Todd Davenport.
