Alternative Energy Vehicles at the 2016 Canadian International AutoShow
Acura RLX Sport Hybrid
The 2016 RLX Sport Hybrid is Acura’s most intelligent car yet. Equipped with a suite of advanced technology features, the RLX sets the bar for connectivity. Inside, it offers a spacious, comfortable and balanced cabin with luxury finishes. The direct-injected i-VTEC V6 engine and three electric motors are designed to achieve power and performance without sacrificing fuel efficiency.
Audi A3 e-tron
The A3 e-tron®1 isn’t your average hybrid. It’s a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle that combines the sportiness and luxury you expect from an Audi with the benefits of a hybrid. The A3 e-tron®1 can operate on pure electric power, gas power or a combination of the two. The electric motor delivers 243 lb-ft of torque for nearly instantaneous response and an incredibly quiet and smooth drive. Combined with the gas engine, e-tron® delivers an impressive 204 hp for responsive acceleration.
Audi H-Tron
High range, swift refueling, sporty road performance: The Audi h-tron quattro concept car can boast all these virtues. It combines a highly efficient fuel cell achieving an output of up to 110 kW with a powerful battery that can provide a temporary boost of 100 kW. The car can be fully refueled with hydrogen in around four minutes, and is then ready to drive for up to 600 kilometers. This vehicle will only be at the AutoShow on Media Preview Day, February 11.
BMW i3
The innovative eDrive transmission of the BMW i3 was designed in the scope of the BMW Efficient Dynamics technology and is not only emission-free, but also offers a nearly silent driving experience. But that’s not why you drive a BMW. The i3’s electric motor provides 125 kW/170 horsepower, with a torque of 250 Nm, giving the BMW i3 particularly high agility in every situation. It can accelerate from zero to 60 km/h in under four seconds, and to 100 km/h in only 7.2 seconds (or 7.9 seconds in the model with Range Extender). The battery charges fully in up to 15 hours, but that can be reduced to under three hours (to 80% capacity) with the optionally available BMW iCharging Station. The i3 has a range of up to 160 km, but with the Range Extender that grows to 250 km.
BMW i8
The BMW i8 is a sports car with the consumption values of a compact. A performance hybrid, it synchronizes an electric motor and combustion engine to achieve maximum efficiency and dynamics on the road. The electric drive, a powerful 131-horsepower motor, is located on the front axle. The rear axle, meanwhile, is driven by a powerful BMW Twin Power Turbo 1.5 L 3-cylinder gasoline engine with 231 horsepower of peak performance and up to 236 lb-ft of torque. These two systems combine to accelerate the BMW i8 from zero to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds—against fuel consumption of just 2.1 L per 100 km. Couple that with a completely aerodynamic design and you’ve got a stylish performer on your hands that checks all the boxes.
Chevrolet Bolt EV
The 2017 Bolt EV fulfills Chevrolet’s promise to offer a long-range, affordable electric vehicle for the masses. Going into production by the end of 2016, the Bolt EV offers more than 320 kilometres of range on a full charge. It also features advanced connectivity technologies designed to enhance and personalize the driving experience. The Bolt EV is capable of using the latest mobile app technology to enable car sharing, advanced GPS routing and gamification. The motor is capable of producing up to 266 lb.-ft. (360 Nm) of torque and 200 hp (150 kW) of motoring power. Combined with a 7.05:1 final drive ratio, it helps propel the Bolt EV from 0-96 km/h in less than seven seconds.
Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid
The 2016 Malibu is new from the ground up, with a longer wheelbase for greater comfort, while still managing to be 136 kg (300 lbs) lighter than its predecessor for improved driving feel and fuel economy. The 2016 Malibu reaches an exceptional level of fuel efficiency with an all-new hybrid powertrain that uses technology from the Chevrolet Volt. The hybrid helps offer a GM-estimated 4.9 L/100 km city, 5.2 L/100 km highway.
Chevrolet Volt
The 2016 Volt offers extended range—up to 80 kilometres of EV range—greater efficiency and stronger acceleration. The new two motor drive unit is up to 12 percent more efficient and 45 kg (100 lbs) lighter than the first-generation drive unit, and that enables a 19 percent faster zero-to-48 km/h acceleration. The Volt’s technology and range advancements are complemented by a design that blends sculpted, muscular proportions with aerodynamic efficiency, and an all-new interior with seating for five with improved functionality.
Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
A Canadian debut in Toronto, the 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the industry’s first electrified minivan. Built in Windsor, Ontario it delivers an estimated range of 50 kilometres on zero-emissions, electric power from a 16-kWh lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. In city driving, it is expected to achieve an impressive efficiency rating of 2.9 gasoline litres equivalent per 100 kilometres (Le/100 km) or 97 Imperial miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). When the battery is depleted, Pacifica Hybrid becomes a part-time electric vehicle, like a conventional hybrid.
Ford C-Max Hybrid
Both the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi feature Ford’s acclaimed next-generation power-split technology that enables operation in electric mode at higher speeds. Both C-MAX vehicles get their power through the combination of a gasoline engine and a battery-driven electric motor. (When powered by gasoline, the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi use the new 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine.) Standard for the C-MAX line is the company’s innovative hands-free liftgate that allows for quick and easy access to the cargo area without ever needing to fumble for keys.
Hyundai Sonata Hybrid
Introducing the all-new Sonata Hybrid and Sonata Plug-in Hybrid—the latest vehicles in the company’s eco-conscious Blue Drive line-up. The Sonata features striking design enhanced by aerodynamics for improved fuel economy, cutting-edge safety features and class-leading cargo versatility—all offered with the added benefit of hybrid technology and efficiency. Thanks to the car’s parallel hybrid powertrain set-up, the Sonata Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid operate on gasoline, electricity, or both.
Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell
The Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell is the first cutting-edge, zero-emissions fuel cell electric vehicle available to Canadian customers. Combining hydrogen and oxygen in an electrochemical process to produce the energy needed to power an electric motor, it refuels with hydrogen gas in less than five minutes, has an estimated range of over 420 km — and its only emission is pure water vapour. With no combustion or moving parts, the fuel cell stack was recognized by WardsAuto World as the first of its kind in the annual Ward’s 10 Best Engines list.
Kia Optima Hybrid
With world-class hybrid powertrain engineering, award-winning design, uncompromised performance and advanced safety systems, the Kia Optima utilizes two propulsion systems: an electric traction motor that works with a lithium polymer battery and a 4-cylinder gas engine. (The Optima Hybrid can be powered by one or both, depending on the type of driving you’re doing.) The Optima Hybrid gives you all the space and comfort of the Optima, combined with all the advantage of a hybrid. Its cabin was thoughtfully designed with drivers in mind, offering a variety of technologically-advanced features dedicated to enhancing every aspect of the drive.
Kia Niro
The first model to be based on Kia’s new dedicated eco-car platform, the Niro HUV is set to achieve a sub-90 g/km CO2 emissions rating (combined, based on the New European Driving Cycle) thanks to its all-new downsized gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. The slim character line and rear windows emphasize the car’s sleek profile, while allowing greater room for the Niro’s muscular wheel arches.
Kia Soul EV
The heart of the 2016 Soul EV is a 27-kWh, 360-volt, 192-cell lithium-ion polymer battery that is designed for high energy capacity, thermal stability and an official EPA-estimated range of 149 km on a full charge. Its flat design and location beneath the floor means there’s minimal battery intrusion into the cabin, which helps Soul EV provide plenty of interior space. The EV was engineered with state-of-the-art materials to increase durability while also reducing its weight and increasing energy density.
Lexus ES 300H
The ‘ES’ in Lexus ES stands for Elegant Sedan—something you’ll understand as soon as you get behind the wheel. Mercedes-Benz S 550e Sedan
Ground breaking innovation, peerless comfort and dynamic performance are just a few of the hallmarks of the S-Class. With a complete suite of the most advanced safety and driver assistance technologies on the planet, the new Mercedes-Benz S 550e plug-in hybrid Sedan will impress with its exceptional dynamism and efficiency. The S 550e offers a system output of 436 hp and 479 lb-ft. torque and sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds.
Mitsubishi I-MiEV ES
Hailed as the ultimate eco-car, the Mitsubishi i-MiEV is simple and economical. Using 100% electricity, and with an efficient electric motor, its operational costs are much more inexpensive than gasoline vehicles, especially when you consider the savings in fuel costs. (Compared to a conventional car that runs on gasoline, the i-MiEV uses less energy and produces no tailpipe emissions.) The perfect car for the urban environment, the i-MiEV can park in tight spaces and breeze through traffic.
Nissan Leaf
The 2016 LEAF is 100% electric and is designed for efficiency, with an aerodynamic body, regenerative brakes and plenty of smart, convenient tech — like the available Nissan Navigation System and the NissanConnect EV information system. (The LEAF’s new enhanced IT system is more user-friendly and gives drivers greater vehicle connectivity.) Parking is also a snap with the Around View Monitor. Using four cameras, the system creates a bird’s-eye-view of the LEAF so you can park easily. Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid
The Cayenne S E-Hybrid is the innovative trendsetter in the Cayenne family. It’s a parallel plug-in hybrid that boasts plenty of agility. After all, even when it comes to alternative drive systems, it’s still always about performance for Porsche. You can tell by the acid green brake calipers that this is no ordinary SUV. And it isn’t. It’s a true blend of luxury and technology.
Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid
The Panamera S E-hybrid combines a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine with an electric motor and is capable of accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds on its way to a top track speed of 259 km/h. The hybrid technology fits seamlessly into a series of forward looking technologies that meld efficiency and performance with one another.

The smart fortwo electric comes in coupe or cabrio, depending on your tastes. Both platforms offer LED lights, A/C with automatic temperature control (including dust/pollen filter), two-spoke leather steering wheel with leather gear knob, 15-inch nine-spoke alloy all-season tires, heated seats and electric adjustable/heated side mirrors. Front spoiler, rear apron and side skirts in body panel colour are standard, as are silver tridion safety cell and mirrors. Where the coupe has a panoramic roof with sun screen, the cabrio offers an electronic tritop-textile-convertible roof (fully automatic, black) with glass rear window and headlining detachable roof bars with integrated storage compartment in tailgate, not to mention a remote roof opener via four-button comfort key. Nothing says going green has to be uncomfortable or any less sporty.
Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid
The Hybrid Crosstrek offers a 2.0-litre Subaru Boxer engine, featuring EV mode, regenerative braking and auto start/stop technology. Not limited to urban environments, the Hybrid Crosstrek has Subaru symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive, as well as Lineartronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) with manual-mode paddle shifters. Comfort is standard, with power-tilting and sliding glass sunroof, premium cloth upholstery with orange stitching, aluminum pedals, automatic climate control system and keyless access with push-button start.
Tesla Model S
Tesla’s advanced electric powertrain delivers exhilarating performance. Unlike a gasoline internal combustion engine with hundreds of moving parts, Tesla electric motors have only one moving piece: the rotor. As a result, Model S acceleration is instantaneous, silent and smooth. Step on the accelerator and in as little as 3.0 seconds Model S is traveling 100 km per hour, without hesitation, and without a drop of gasoline. Model S is an evolution in automobile engineering.

The much-anticipated eco-SUV from Tesla is setting new standards in safety and performance.
