KITCHENER, Ont. (June 28, 2016) – Ryan Hunsinger continues to succeed during his second month with the Kitchener-based Durnin Motorsports team. The Stouffville, Ont. pilot leads the Strickland’s GMC 602 Crate Sprint Car standings through six races at Ohsweken Speedway.
Known as ‘The Gunslinger’, Hunsinger has been strong so far this season in the Durnin Motors/Planet Realty/Retail Design Group No.43h, winning three races to start the year. Since his most recent win on June 4, Hunsinger has been in contention for another trip to Victory Lane every night.
“We seem to have setup that works. The car’s working really well and we’re working well together. We’re just doing our best to get better every week,” Hunsinger said.
Following the third victory, Hunsinger was running near the front when he had a slow-leaking right-rear tire. He nursed the car to a sixth-place finish. A week later, Hunsinger ran out of fuel while leading a caution-filled race. One week ago, he was back on track and finished second.
All that to say Hunsinger has been strong and holds a seven-point advantage over Brad Herron in the championship standings entering July.
“The competition is always really good in that division. With everybody holding the same horsepower, it comes down to the drivers and setup,” Hunsinger said of the Crate motor powered class. “You’re not going to find a more level playing field than that in racing. That’s the beauty of it – everybody’s so close.”
The Durnin Motorsports team has experienced success on the racetrack this season and is working together to overcome the logistical challenges they face each week. With a Kitchener-based operation for a Stouffville driver who works the night shift, there have been some late nights and extra kilometres logged so far this season. However, it hasn’t been noticeable because of the camaraderie among the small team.
“When I started racing, it was just me and my buddies and we would go racing every weekend. That’s the same feeling I get with these guys,” Hunsinger remarked happily. “We’re probably one of the lower budget teams, but it’s been fun every week. We’re focusing on having fun and being competitive every week.”
Part of Hunsinger’s excitement so far this season has not only been the success on its own, but the fact it’s coming in a J&J-built chassis.
“We’ve been competitive right from the start. I really like that car. It’s the first time I’ve driven a J&J car and it really hooks up,” Hunsinger said. “Some of the track conditions I’ve struggled with in the past, this car really hooks up.”
Hunsinger and the No.43h team are looking forward to a pair of significant events in July. The month will start with a Canada Day special on July 1 and conclude with a big stage for the Northern Crate Nationals on Monday, July 25 when Kasey Kahne will be in attendance to race at Ohsweken.
